Song of Songs 1:1

"Solomon’s Song of Songs"

As we take a glance at the first verse, it immediately helps every reader to understand that Solomon was the writer of this book “Song of Songs”. This first verse becomes the preface of not only the verses or the chapters that follow, but also the entire book as given by the Supreme Being. It is said in 1 Kings 3: 12, " there will never have been anyone (wise) like you, nor will there ever be”. That is, there was and will be no wise man like Solomon before or after him. If such blessed wise Solomon had written this song, it is very certain that there will surely be many intense dense ideas hidden in this song which is composed of sublime parables.

In 1 Kings 4:32, it is said, "He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five". The number of songs sung by Solomon is precisely given as 1005. It is essential and is worth noting that Solomon was a great poet with full of divine wisdom who wrote and sang more than a thousand songs. There is evidence in the scriptures in 1 Kings, chapter 3 that he received this divine wisdom from the Lord. I Kings 3: 9 shows the request of Solomon as “give your servant (Solomon) a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong” and in verse 12, God blesses him with his request and more. " I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone (wise) like you, nor will there ever be.” Therefore, with God’s divine wisdom and guidance in the divine plan, Solomon has written this song. So the first thing to understand here are the people he is referring to, that is, Who is Solomon referring to as "He", "Lover", "The Bridegroom" and "She", "Beloved" and "Bride"!

During Solomon's lifetime, the birth of Jesus Christ was prophesied here and there, as "a child would be born", "a son is given", "Prince of Peace", etc. But very little information was known about Jesus Christ by a very few scholars. In such a time, Solomon has sung this song prophesying everything from the beginning to the end of the world. Moreover, we can also say that he has also brought all the crispy main ideas of the Bible from the beginning of this book to its end. Such kind of prophesy can be revealed only by divine wisdom. If a person wants to write a song about someone with pure intense deep meaning and understanding, it can only be done if that person is known personally with continuous regular relationship. Solomon has just written what God has revealed to him because of his divine power. But he must have also been puzzled about the revelation in this book.

Many mistakenly think that because Solomon had written this song, he is the bridegroom mentioned here. That is why this song is described globally with the worldly view of love and marriage. If he is the groom, he would have mentioned it somewhere for sure. But he has not mentioned it. If Solomon would have sung the events of the last days knowing that Jesus Christ was the groom, we can certainly say that he would have mentioned the name of Jesus Christ in this book. Whereas, at a time when Jesus Christ was yet unknown, he has written this prophetic song just as it was revealed to him through the wisdom of God. But in Solomon's revelation, since the name of the bride and the groom is unknown to him, he has given the common name "Lover" to the groom and "Beloved" to the bride. With the Divine purpose, the groom’s name Jesus Christ was hidden in the Old Testament and was first announced by the angel of the Lord to mother Mary in the gospel of Matthew 1:21 "You are to give Him the name Jesus”.

Besides that, Jesus Christ Himself has revealed who the bridegroom was during his life on earth. In Luke 5:34, and Mark 2:19, "How can the guest of the bridegroom fast while He is with them." And in Luke 5:35, and Mark 2:20, "The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast." These verses clearly reveal that Jesus Christ refers himself as the bridegroom. In addition, Bible also speaks about the bride, John 3:29 says, "The bride belongs to the bridegroom." This is something known worldly. But in Isaiah 62:5 says, "As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you." Here we see Isaiah comparing the bridegroom to God and the bride to ‘you’ who is the church. But the truth is even more stronger and piercing; that is, Church only means the beloved ones of God or the selected ones ready to enter God’s kingdom and not all the Christians. Through this, the scriptures clearly show us that the bridegroom is Jesus Christ and the bride is the church chosen by God according to his criteria.

We need to understand that Bible provides us with clear and precise information about everything. Besides that, the New Testament itself is included in the book "Song of Songs". As you continue to read this book, you can find out the explanation for the above information. It should be read from the perspective of a book with acceptance to the merging of sublime poetry, prophecy and parables jelled in together.

Does your mouth sing praises to the Lord?
